Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
