Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge confronting Europe is not societal but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from stronger efficiency gains in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over $10bn, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a true capital markets union, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. However, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent loss of world influence.
