New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting typically experience a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
People who have come off the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle management.
